Schools and Clinicians: Collaborative Health Care
A recent study has shown that “a child's inability to pay attention when they start school had the strongest negative effect on how they performed at the end of high school -- regardless of their IQ” (1).
Each spring, after the child has struggled for months in school, teachers and families are faced with the daunting task of finding the path that will increase the child’s chance of success. Shouldn’t that path lead to you?
Outreach to Schools
“Early intervention to prevent teens from dropping out of high school and the serious long-term consequences of poor high school achievement should be a major focus for both education and public-health policy makers” (1). All of us have seen the tragedy of undiagnosed, untreated attention problems causing school underachievement, low self-esteem, depression, drug abuse, increased delinquency, and dropping out of school in later years.
The TOVA Company invites you join us to improve the lives of these children and their families by helping your neighborhood schools obtain needed resources. Together, we can build more successful futures for children who might otherwise fall through the cracks.
What can we do? Screening for attention problems should be as routine as screening for vision and hearing problems. Attention significantly affects the ability to learn, to relate to peers and teachers, and to develop healthy self-esteem. In contrast to the overactive and impulsive youngster, it’s not easy to identify the quiet, somewhat withdrawn youngster with an attention problem who isn’t disturbing anyone.
The T.O.V.A. Screening Version enables schools to screen all of their students for attention. Combining an easy to use DSM IV-based behavior rating with a T.O.V.A. screening test increases the chance to identify children with attention issues who need to be referred to a clinician in your area for an evaluation and possible intervention.
Your Clinical T.O.V.A. provides you with information not available in the school’s Screening Version. Once you make the diagnosis, the T.O.V.A.’s Intervention Report helps the school create a 504/IEP plan to help the student achieve his or her full potential.
The TOVA Company is aware of the challenges schools face. We offer specially reduced fees to school districts. We are also aware of the time constraints on health care practitioners. Therefore, we have a letter of introduction for you to give to your school districts. This letter gives an overview of the advantages that the T.O.V.A. offers schools and provides an introduction to you and your services to your community. If you would like to use this letter, please email us at info@tovatest.com to receive your copy.
