Creating a T.O.V.A. Shortcut in Win95/98/2000/XP

Information for Windows users.

Desktop Shortcuts

Once you've confirmed that everything in T.O.V.A. works (Microswitch, Scorebox, Timing, and Auditory) in MS DOS mode on Windows 95/98 machines, then a shortcut may be created.

Shortcuts allow non-Windows applications (like T.O.V.A.) to run from an icon on your screen, though the application actually runs outside of Windows in MS DOS mode.

Remember, T.O.V.A. is not a Windows program and always needs to be run in MS DOS mode or bypassed completely. (See T.O.V.A. and Windows for additional information on bypassing).

Creating a Shortcut

Please read these instructions carefully (twice!) before attempting this process.

  1. From the Windows 95/98 desktop, double-click on the "My Computer", and in the resulting window, double-click on the C drive.

  2. Look for the TOVA_7 folder, and double-click on it to open it. Then, look for the TOVA.EXE application. It's the icon that looks like a picture of a window without anything inside it.

  3. Right-click on that icon with the RIGHT mouse button. This should bring up a menu, from which you can select 'Create Shortcut' (or 'Send to Desktop as Shortcut' on Win98 machines) by left-clicking on your selection. Windows will then create a 'Short cut to TOVA' icon in that folder.

  4. Click and drag that new shortcut icon out of that folder and all window(s) all the way to the desktop. Then close all the windows (by clicking on the 'X' in the top right of each window.

Using a Shortcut

Click the RIGHT mouse button on the newly created shortcut (now on the Desktop) and select "Properties". Once in the Properties window, click on the 'Program" tab. Make sure the Command Line (CMMD LINE) says "C:\tova_7\tova.exe (drive:\dir\tova.exe)". If it says anything else, then you must delete the icon and start over (Highlight the icon and hit delete key to get rid of it).

Once you've confirmed that it displays the TOVA.exe on the command line, then click on the 'Advanced" button.

In the 'Advanced' window, remove the check mark or REMOVE the 'Suggest MS-DOS mode...' and ADD/PUT IN the check mark in the 'MS-DOS MODE' option. Then REMOVE the check in the 'Warn before entering' box. Click on "OK" to leave that window, then click on "OK" again to leave the properties window.

Renaming a Shortcut

Click with the RIGHT mouse button (one time) and select 'Rename' from the menu list.

After you selected 'Rename', type in the new title of the icon (i.e. TOVA Test), then hit or and the new name should be displayed below the icon.

To verify that the shortcut works correctly, double-click on the icon to open the TOVA application, then run the 3 tests from the OPTIONS Menu and play auditory Stimuli (if you have the auditory). Make sure it all works correctly, then go to FILE and 'EXIT' the TOVA program. The machine should then re-start, and go back into Windows.
