Exporting T.O.V.A. Files

How to Export from within the T.O.V.A.

If you cannot print from TOVA, or you would like to import a TOVA report into a word processing program, these instructions will allow you to print from outside the TOVA_7 program in various formats.

From the TOVA_7 program:

  1. "Open" the file you want to print. This file must be a scored report. After the scored report is opened, key in -ALT- F for the "File" menu and select "Export".

  2. The export option will ask for confirmation of the file to be exported. If it is not the correct file, key the -TAB- key until -CANCEL-is selected and hit -ENTER- or -RETURN- to cancel the export. If it is the correct file to export, hit the -TAB- key until -OK- is selected and then hit -ENTER- or -RETURN- to start the export process.

  3. The application will then ask you to select the files to export. To select the files, use the UP & DOWN arrows to high light the form you want to print and hit the -Space BAR- to put an X in its appropriate box. If you want everything to export, select the "Select All Files" box.

  4. After all the appropriate forms have been selected with an X, hit -OK- to start exporting. It will flash messages as it exports each of the files.

  5. The program will tell you when it is finished.

After it is finished exporting, leave or exit the TOVA program (Hit -ALT- F and then select the "EXIT" or X to exit the program. Then hit -OK- to leave.)

After you have left the program, and your file has been exported...

At the C:\ prompt, type in "CD TOVA_7/EXPORT" (without the quotes) then press the -ENTER- or -RETURN- key.

You should then be at the C:\TOVA_7\EXPORT prompt. This is the directory where all the exported files are located. Each form of a report is a separate file. To see a list of the files type "DIR/P" then press -ENTER-. This will list files one page at a time.

To copy to a disk from the TOVA_7\EXPORT directory,type "Copy . A: or B:" (depending on the letter that corresponds to your floppy drive). This will copy all the files to the selected floppy drive.

To print from a disk, change your command prompt to the directory where the files are located: e.g. "A:" or "B:" then press -ENTER-. From that prompt follow the instructions as if you were still on your hard drive and at the TOVA_7\EXPORT directory.

To print from the DOS environment...

To print all files in the directory or on the disk, type in one of the following choices:

  • "COPY . LPT1" which will copy all files to the printer port 1.

  • "COPY . PRN" which will copy all files to any printer attached.

  • "COPY .FM PRN" which will copy only TOVA forms to any printer.

To print all the files for a particular subject, type in "COPY FILENAME.* PRN". The filename is a T then the subject number (underscore) session number. (dot) form number. (e.g. T000101.FM1 would be subject #0001 session 01 and form #1).

Examples:

  • "COPY T0001_01.* PRN" - Prints all the files for subject #0001 _ session#1.

  • "COPY T0002_01.FM* LPT1" - Prints all Forms for subject #0002 session#1 to printer port 1

  • "COPY SAMANTHA.FM* PRN" - Copies all of the tova forms for a file called "Samantha" forms to any printer.

To Print from Windows 3.x...

From the "Program Manager," select "Main" and then select "File Manager".

When "File Manager" opens, the left side of the window should show a box with all the directories of the C:\ drive. The right side should show a box with a list of files from the selected directory on the left side.

Use your mouse to scroll down and select the TOVA7 directory (folder) by highlighting it and clicking on the TOVA7 directory folder. Next, select the EXPORT directory (folder) from within the TOVA_7 directory, by highlighting it and clicking on the EXPORT directory folder.

The left side of the screen should now show a box with all the directories of the C:\ drive, with The TOVA_7\EXPORT directory selected.

The right or center should show a box with all the exported TOVA test files. Here's an example of some such files:

    * T0001_01.FM1
    * T0001_01.FM2
    * T0001_01.FM3
    * T0001_01.FM4
    * T0001_01.FM5
    * T0001_01.FM6

Files similar to these are your report files and can be printed from any word processing program.

To Print, highlight a file click the mouse once. Then, go to the "File" menu and select "Print".

If it does not print right away, or if a "Can not Print" or "No application associated with this file. Choose Associate from the File menu to create an association" message appears, click "OK" and go to the "File" menu and select "Associate".

The "Associate" window should appear. In the "Associate With:" section, select the "Write Document (write.exe)" option, so that the system selects the appropriate writing or word processing program tthrough which to print the file.

After the correct program has been associated with the T.O.V.A. file, click "OK". Then go to "File" and select "Print". The file should then print. Repeat with each file you want to print.

TO OPEN FROM A WORD PROCESSING OR SPREADSHEET PROGRAM...

Open or start your program and select "Open", "Retrieve", or "Import". When it asks what path or where the path that the files are located in, make the path be

C:\TOVA7\EXPORT That is the Drive letter (C:) \ TOVA directory (TOVA7) \ Directory

where the files are (EXPORT).

The files should all be in that TOVA_7\EXPORT directory and you should be able to Open, Retrieve, and Import any of these (ASCII ) files. The alignment may not be adjusted but the data should all be there.

The default font is Courier 9, which may improve the alignment of the charts.
