T.O.V.A. and Windows 95/98/ME

More information regarding T.O.V.A. in different Windows environments.

T.O.V.A.® & Windows

(These steps may also help with any other DOS based application that is not designed for Windows environments.)

Remember T.O.V.A. is NOT a Windows program.

It is a DOS based application and needs to be run under DOS or as close as possible. Sometimes there is interfering software loading (like Networks and other drivers) that keep the hardware from being seen or working properly or interferes with the operation of the program. The simplest way to see if software is interfering (with printing or TOVA) is to not load or bypass the startup files of the computer.

Windows 95 machines

The first way is to "Reboot or restart in MS-DOS Mode".... After Windows 95 has started you should have your desktop up and there should be a "START" button. When you click on that button a menu should pop up and from there select "Shut Down". When you click on shut down, several options show up. From the Shut Down Menu, select "Restart in MS-DOS Mode". That will restart your computer and not load many Win 95 files that may be interfering with TOVA. When it finishes starting up it will bring you to a C:\Windows> prompt. Type CD\ (that's C D \ -backslash, not the / by the ? key) then hit the or key. It should bring you to the root or plain C:> prompt. From the root and without Windows running in the background, you can type TOVA to start the TOVA program (if its been installed) and try everything out from there or install TOVA from there. If everything works properly then you can "create a Shortcut" from within Windows 98 to do this restarting for you. Look in your Win 95 book or view the TOVA Shortcut page or call the TOVA Company for Tech support. Remember to make the shortcut reboot in MS-DOS mode to "always" run in that mode.

To bypass more in-depth or if the Restart in DOS MODE doesn't work... When you turn on or boot up the computer, it should say in text, "Starting Windows 95...", at some point in the very beginning of the startup. When that "Starting Windows..." text is seen press the to go to the Optional Startup Menu. From the Optional Start Up Menu list you can select either COMMAND PROMPT ONLY or SAFE MODE COMMAND PROMPT ONLY either options will bypass some files that may interfere. After selecting either of those options it should bring you to a plain C:> prompt, from there you can type TOVA to start the TOVA program (if its been installed) and try everything out from there or install TOVA from there.

Windows 3.x

Just EXIT or QUIT Windows. (You'll get a message saying "You're about to close your Windows session- OK or Cancel", when you exit properly). It should bring you to a C:> prompt. Run TOVA and try everything out from there.

MS-DOS based machines running DOS 6 or higher

When you turn on or boot up the computer, it should say in text, "Starting MS DOS...", at some point in the very beginning of the startup. When that "Starting MS DOS..." prompt is seen press the to bypass the start up files (AUTOEXEC.BAT & CONFIG.SYS). It should bring you to a C:> prompt. Run TOVA and try everything out from there.
