Frequently Asked Questions about the T.O.V.A.®

How does the T.O.V.A. compare to other CPTs?

  • Accuracy: With special tools, the T.O.V.A. can control measurements and timing with ±1 ms accuracy:

    • Using an external measuring device (the T.O.V.A. microswitch), more precise than a mouse or keyboard can be
    • Eliminating operating system delays through the use of the Precision Testing Environment (PTE), or with External Audio/Video (EAV) testing, which is independent of your operating system
    • Compensating for the quirks of display timing with our monitor calibration
  • Duration: Research shows many individuals with attention problems can process information normally for 10-15 minutes and then experience difficulty. The T.O.V.A. is the only CPT that measures attention variables for a full 21.6 minutes for subjects five-and-a-half (5.5) years old and above. The T.O.V.A. keeps the task long and boring.

  • Stimuli: Unlike other commercially available CPTs that use numbers or letters, the T.O.V.A. uses geometric shapes, so that language and learning disabilities do not interfere.

  • Simple task: Unlike most CPTs that use complex tasks that are influenced by learning or working memory, the T.O.V.A. uses a simple go/no-go task to obtain an objective measure of sustained attention.

Who can administer a T.O.V.A.?

The T.O.V.A. is simple enough to administer, and materials and support are provided to train most anyone in the proper administration and use of T.O.V.A.

What ages does the T.O.V.A. cover?

The visual norms for the T.O.V.A. go from 4 years to 80+, by age and gender. The auditory has norms from 6 to 29, by age and gender. More norms are being collected and added.

Why are there visual and auditory T.O.V.A. tests?

A significant number of individuals process visual information differently than auditory information and may have attention problems in one modality but not the other. Thus, the T.O.V.A. can measure both modalities.

How long is T.O.V.A. test?

The T.O.V.A. test runs 21.6 minutes for five-and-a-half (5.5) years old and older.

How long is the short version of the visual T.O.V.A. for four- and five-year-olds?

The visual T.O.V.A. is 10.8 minutes long which is only half of the full test--one quarter of stimulus infrequent and one quarter of stimulus frequent. The auditory T.O.V.A. is not available under six years of age because research has shown that the hearing spectrum has not developed enough discrimination to differentiate the sounds.

Can I run the auditory and visual tests simultaneously?

No. The auditory and visual T.O.V.A. tests must be run as separate test sessions, and each have their own norms and reports. If you want to run auditory and visual tests for a subject, you will administer two separate test sessions, use two test credits, and end up with two different T.O.V.A. reports.

Can I get help to understand the test results?

We provide free consultation about T.O.V.A. results.

Do you have a Mac OS X version of T.O.V.A.?

Yes, the T.O.V.A. is available for Mac OS X. See the T.O.V.A. system requirements here. Then purchase the T.O.V.A. here.

How many additional sites can I have?

The T.O.V.A. software may be installed on multiple computers, although the T.O.V.A. hardware must be used to administer the T.O.V.A.

Can I install the T.O.V.A. hardware myself?

No qualification is necessary to install the T.O.V.A. software and hardware. T.O.V.A. hardware components are not user-serviceable and instead should be returned to The TOVA Company for repair. Technical Support is available if you have questions.

Do you offer a virtual or remote TOVA test?

As noted above, the T.O.V.A. test uses precise timing to provide accurate results. To avoid inconsistent delays, the T.O.V.A. must work with your hardware directly, at a low level.

A remote or virtual test would introduce inconsistencies. A mouse click or key press can not be measured reliably. Your screen will not display at the same rate as others. An internet test would introduce even more inconsistency.

While The TOVA Company is working on more virtual solutions, for now the T.O.V.A. test must run locally using our own hardware.
